Avoiding AI Video Slop — The Craft Basics
The gap between 'technically AI-generated' and 'looks like AI slop' is a short list of habits: consistency, pacing, and knowing the three artifacts that give a clip away.
There's a specific, recognizable look to AI video that gives itself away — even when every individual clip is technically well-generated. It's not one big flaw. It's an accumulation of small ones: a shot that lingers a beat too long, a face that's subtly different in the next cut, a sign in the background that reads as nonsense. This lesson is the short list of habits that close that gap.
The Three Symptoms Worth Knowing
Most AI video artifacts fall into one of three recognizable buckets. Learning to name the symptom is most of the way to fixing it.
Warping and morphing — limbs, hands, or objects that reshape mid-motion — is almost always a sign the shot asked for too much motion at once. A subject sprinting through a complex environment with a moving camera is three demanding things happening simultaneously. The fix is rarely "regenerate and hope": shorten the shot, or simplify which one of those three things is actually moving.
Flicker and texture crawl — surfaces that shimmer or subtly swap patterns frame to frame — shows up most in fine, repeating detail: hair, water, foliage, a textured fabric. The fix is to describe the texture as calmer, or reduce how much the camera moves across it, since camera motion is what makes flicker visible in the first place.
Garbled text and signage is the most predictable of the three, because it's a known, named weak spot across every current platform, not a random failure. The reliable fix isn't iteration at all — it's avoidance. Keep readable text out of the frame you're generating and add real text in editing afterward, the same way you'd add a title card.
Consistency Is a Process, Not a Setting

Four habits carry almost all of the weight here. Lock a reference frame — generate or pick one still image first, and feed it back in as the starting point for every related shot, rather than describing the same subject from scratch each time. Repeat descriptors verbatim — copy the exact wording for wardrobe, subject, and lighting into every prompt in a sequence; paraphrasing between shots is where drift sneaks in. Limit shots per sequence — three to five is the practical ceiling for this track; beyond that, small inconsistencies compound faster than you can catch them on review. Write a one-line continuity note per shot — a running log of what changed from the last shot, so an unintended jump is obvious the moment you read it back, not something you notice for the first time on a full watch.
Pacing Is Craft Too
Consistency and artifacts are the technical half of avoiding slop. Pacing is the half that's easy to forget because nothing about it looks "broken." A static shot held two seconds too long, or a sequence that cuts on nothing in particular, reads as amateurish even with flawless generation underneath it.

A shot earns its length by what's happening in it — once the motion or the moment resolves, cut. Letting a clip run because the generation happened to be four extra seconds long, rather than because the shot needed it, is one of the fastest tells that a video was assembled instead of directed.
The Restraint Instinct
Nearly every craft mistake in this lesson traces back to the same root cause: asking for more than one shot can reliably deliver. More motion than the model can track cleanly.
