Native memory is convenient and siloed. The notes layer you own is the piece of memory infrastructure that actually survives a tool swap.
Two layers of memory, and only one of them is yours
Every assistant in your stack remembers something about you -- past conversations, stated preferences, project context you've fed it. That's genuinely useful, and it's also a trap if it's the ONLY memory you're building, because that memory lives entirely inside one vendor's product. It's what this lesson calls native memory: convenient, automatic, and completely siloed. Switch your primary assistant for a better fit on some axis (exactly what lesson 776's framework might one day tell you to do), and every bit of context that tool remembered about you stays behind. You don't lose access gracefully. You lose it entirely, and start the next tool from zero.
The fix isn't to distrust native memory or avoid using it -- it's genuinely convenient day to day. The fix is building a second layer above it: a notes layer you actually own, in a plain notes app or a folder of files, that holds the decisions, preferences, and standing facts that matter enough to survive a tool change. That layer feeds INTO whichever tool's native memory you're using at the moment, not the other way around. Native memory is the cache. Your notes are the source of truth.
What belongs in the notes layer
Not everything. A notes layer that tries to capture every exchange with every assistant becomes its own kind of clutter -- another inbox nobody actually reads. The useful version is selective: standing facts about how you work and what you're working on, reusable instructions worth using more than once, and any answer good enough that retyping the question later would genuinely cost you time. If a chat response was useful exactly once and will never come up again, it doesn't need to live in your notes -- the notes layer is for what repeats, not for a transcript of everything you've ever asked an AI.
This is also where lesson 780's saved-prompt library technically lives -- prompt hygiene is really just the notes layer applied specifically to reusable instructions rather than to facts and decisions. The two aren't separate systems; they're the same portable layer, organized by what kind of thing you're keeping.
A useful way to decide what earns a spot in the notes layer is to ask whether you'd be annoyed at yourself for losing it. Losing a one-off chat response about a fact you'll never need again costs nothing. Losing the exact structure that finally got a difficult client email right, or the standing preference that keeps every assistant from re-asking you the same clarifying question, is a real, repeated cost every time you have to reconstruct it from memory. That "would I be annoyed" test is a faster filter than trying to categorize every piece of content up front, and it tends to produce a notes layer that stays lean instead of ballooning into an archive of everything.
The loop that makes it actually work: capture, organize, retrieve, reuse
A notes layer that fills up and never gets read again isn't a knowledge system -- it's a junk drawer with better formatting. The habit that turns a folder of notes into something genuinely useful is a four-step loop, and the step most people skip is the one that matters most.
Capture happens the moment something's worth keeping -- not "later," because later rarely comes, and the good answer is gone by the time you remember you meant to save it. Organize means one tag: what job does this serve? Not the date, not the tool it came from -- the job, because that's what you'll be searching for months from now, not a timestamp. Retrieve is the step that has to happen BEFORE you re-ask an assistant the same question -- search your own notes first. And reuse closes the loop: paste the retrieved context back in, which means the assistant you're using gets better-informed answers about you specifically, without you having re-explaining yourself from scratch.
The loop only earns its keep at the retrieve step. Capture and organize without ever retrieving is just a more elaborate way of forgetting things -- the honest test for whether your knowledge system is working is simple: the next time a familiar question comes up, do you search first, or type the whole thing over again?
